Dickinson's Poem Because I Could Not Stop For Death Thantos, Charon, Death. No matter what we call it, the idea that is death is always with us. It causes great pain, but also inspires. Dickinson's poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death is, obviously enough, about death. But rather than being sad about it, she wants the reader to view death as being an inevitable change, rather than an end to existence. By personifying death, she makes it seem relaxing and serene. She also adds to this effect by using vivid imagery and metaphors, as well as rhythm, to create a poem that plays out in the reader's mind like a movie, due also in part to the dramatic imagery. One of the major parts of this poem is the personification of death, a common theme in her poetry. By making death human, it makes death understandable. In one of her other poems, I Read My Sentence - Steadily-, she says She and Death, Acquainted-/ meet Tranquilly as Friends. Her treatment of death as a friend makes it seem as if people are silly for fearing death, but rather should accept, even embrace it as the natural course all lives must take. She makes it clear that it is inescapable, and that we should not try. When she says, Because I could not stop for Death, it causes the reader to ask why she could not stop. The obvious answer is that she could not stop because she was so wrapped up in her own life, so busy, that she did not think about death. She shares the carriage with Death and Immortality, two opposites, Death being the cessation of life, and Immortality being perpetual life. This poses something of a conundrum, unless the reader realizes that Death is there for the corporeal self, and Immortality is there for her soul or spirit, which, according to many belief systems is eternal. She describes Death as being peaceful and civil, relaxed and unhurried. This is established by his Civility and He knew no haste. This fits with the popular conception of death. She makes a significant omission in that she does not describe Death physically. This permits the reader to use his or her imagination to form a physical depiction of Death. In the third stanza, she describes the things they pass, all of which could be interpreted as the three phases of life, or the three Grecian fates. The school, where children strove/ At recess in the Ring represents the early part of life, childhood, or Clothos, the fate who wove the threads of life. The next phase and Fate combination is adulthood, represented by Laecheis, who measured the threads of life. The line, The Fields of Gazing Grain, symbolizes this. Grain also symbolizes fertility, and since adulthood is when people have children, this highlights the image. But there is the promise, or perhaps threat, of things to come when the reader thinks of the popular image of Death, holding a scythe, which was used to reap the grain, as it also reaps the lives of those Death goes to claim. The setting sun is the end of life, old age, or Atropos, who cut the threads of life. This phrase also serves as a transition to a much darker fourth stanza. Dickinson's rhythm also changes from a regular beat to a shorter, darker feeling rhythm, which changes back after this stanza. This combined with imagery such as Quivering, Chill, and Gossamer, with a tippet made of tulle causes the reader to feel the cold stillness of the tomb. The word Gossamer is a good choice, because the thin, almost translucent material is suggestive of ghosts, flowing, transparent and cold. This image could also mean that she feels the loss of those in her life who were dear to her, and the memories of those who have passed before her. The next stanza is an enigma. The house image could be many things, ranging from the tombs the Romans built along their roads, to her deep-seated fear of her world forgetting her. Pulp Fiction Review essays Quentin Tarantinos 1994 box office hit Pulp Fiction created a new genre: film noir with the sarcasm and disillusionment of the 90s. Base situations and low-life characters somehow do not come off as dramatic and shocking, but rather as ordinary and understandable. Tarantino, a self-taught, one-time video store clerk, has made a film not based on reality but based on film. Pulp Fiction is a tongue-in-cheek look at typical movie cliches, ranging from the dangerous life of a mobster to the returning of a patriotic war hero. While Pulp Fiction is only occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, a smirk remains painted on the lips of its viewers through out the duration of the two and a half hour film. The extraordinary somehow becomes ordinary and the ordinary somehow seems inappropriate. Perhaps it is the nonchalance with which Tarantino approaches drug use and violence that has offended so many people, but conversely, it is that same casual nature that makes the film void of judgment and therefore draws people to it. The screenplay, written by Tarantino and Roger Avary, is quick and witty. Action is cushioned by dialogue, and even without action, the dialogue is strong enough to stand on its own. The most enjoyable banter takes place between organized-crime partners, Jules and Vincent Vega. Vincent Vega, played by John Travolta, is a well-intentioned hit man who, despite his arrogance, usually screws things up. Travolta gives a stellar performance, making a cocky, middle-aged thug seem harmless, charming, and oddly loveable. Samuel L. Jackson is cast as Vincent Vegas better half, Jules. Jackson delivers his lines with an undaunted confidence and Shaft-style smoothness. Lines which could potentially seem over-the-top, through the assistance of Jacksons amazing screen presence, come across as intimidating and oh-so-cool. It is also a firm that is synonymous with healthy lifestyles and ecological ethics.à Innocentà Drinks is now the leader of the smoothie market (see Appendix 2) in the UK, with the Coca-Cola Company owned a 58% of the companys stake (GMID, 2012). Moreover they sold their products in supermarkets, local shops, coffee shops and several other outlets. Furthermore Innocent drinks are now sold in ten European countries (Fast Track 100, 2012). Innocent shows a big interest to achieve the five-a-day in order to improve publics health. Thus, the company is working with Government consultants and nutrition specialists in order to find ways to promote fruit consumption (Marketing Week, 2011). They have shown a big interest about charity and according to the companys official website they donate 10% of their profits to the charity, the majority of which goes to the innocent foundation. Foundation is currently supporting sixteen partner projects mainly in countries where innocent drinks supplies its fruit. They focus on agricultural, because company believes that people should use the natural resources in order to enable a better future (Innocent website, 2012 b). The company emphasise that it is workers show respect for the environment and all the fruits used are 100% eco-friendly produced (Innocent website, 2012 b). The two human resource practices that the Innocent focus on are the Training and Development and Payment and Reward. The progress within the company can be individually or team based. Additionally the employer has to take into consideration that the development starts form the organisation then moves to the department and finally to the individual (Figure 1). Moreover there is a several methods for the company when it is considering the training and development of both decision-making and non-decision making personnel. The firm can give emphasis to formal training procedures and self-development in order to achieve an improved standard for its employees. The table below illustrates information about the most effective methods for employees to learn. It is remarkable that the majority of them prefer to learn in the work place which Innocent provides during the induction compulsory programme. Innocent provides two week induction programme in addition to other courses. For example the Innocent Drinks Company provides two compulsory training programs for its employees such as the innocent academy and the innocent business academy. Performance related pay: This method reflects not only outcomes or output but also actual performance in the work (MacKenna and Beech, 2008). Increases level of basic pay based on overall personal performance, rather than as a one-off payment. Profit related pay: The employees pay and bonuses may be straight related to the companys profit or the achievement of effective targets. Principally employees would be given a motivation to work harder, and in high profit times for the company they will earn the rewards, though in bad times they would share the companys collapse. Employment Law-Legislation According to CIPD (2012), employment law refers to the legal rights of employees and employers. A range of employee rights are protected by employment law. Those regulations are either provided by European Union or by UK government. European Union can make suggestions for employment law and its members can vote against or can enact them. However some common employee rights such as those that encourage improvements related to health and safety must adopted by all members , including those members who vote against them (Foot and Hook ,2011). Moreover a general role which applied to all EU countries is the regulation which specifies to a maximum of 48 weekly working hours (Foot and Hook, 2011). According to the Equality Act 2010, no employee has to be discriminated about age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity (ACAS, 2010). This law became to practice in October 2010 (ACAS, 2010). Two examples of the Equality Act 2010: Employers have to design policies to encourage equal opportunities (Foot and Hook, 2011). They also have to train and inform the managers and the employees and ensure that no discrimination is occurring in the work environment (Foot and Hook, 2011). According to the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal for employers to discriminate because of anything of the above (ACAS, 2012). Discrimination is divided in four categories. Firstly, directà discrimination occurs when an employer or employee treat someone less positively because of their actual or perceived sex or because of the sex of someone with whom they relate. Secondly indirect discrimination can happen where the company has a policy, training or actions that apply to all employees, but particularly disadvantage employees of a specific sex (ACAS, 2012). Thirdly, harassment occurs when unnecessary behaviourà related to sex has the reason or consequence of violating a persons dignityà or creating an unapproachable,à antagonisti c, humiliating, embarrassing or unpleasant environment. Fourthly victimisation is the unreasonable behaviour of an employee who has made or supported a criticism about sex discrimination (ACAS, 2012). As well as sex discrimination, race discrimination occurs under four categories. Race discrimination can occur because of colour, race, nationality, citizenship, ethnic or national origin are illegal (ACAS, 2012). Innocent can organise conferences about sugar and acid levels and through the Training and Development HRM practice can develop employees knowledge about this key issue for a company which claims that is selling healthy drinks. Through this action the firm can improve its general reflection and also can show respect to the consumers. An additional recommendation can be the cooperation with a health promoting organisation or restaurant instead of McDonalds with which the company had cooperation the last five years (see Appendix 2). The cooperation with McDonalds had a bad reflection to the consumer and the firm can essentially represent its first idea which was the production of healthy drinks (Marketing Week, 2007 b). In order to succeed this cooperation the company has to encourage its personnel and motivate them through the different HRM practices such as Payment and Reward. 5. Conclusion To conclude Innocent applies the current HRM practices and current legislation effectively. According to their website and the information which are provided by the company employees are working in a friendly environment and they have many options to improve their performance through the HRM practices. Furthermore the company shows respect to the different race and gender, thus they follow the current employment law end especially the Equality Act 2010. Moreover by following the recommendations, the company can develop its functioning through employees ideas and actions as the business excellence model illustrates (Figure 1). 6. Science vs. Religion: How were we created? Essays -- essays research p
à à à à à The idea of creation is one of the most controversial issues we have today. Your age, background, religion, and beliefs are the main characters that effect what you believe created the world. Science believes several theories on the creation but the most accepted is the Big Bang Theory. Religion has their own views on creation, Christians believe that God created the world, Islamic believe that Allah created man but in steps, and Mayans believe that the Heart of Sky created man. I plan on discussing each view in detail and then you the reader may make your decision on what you feel are true. à à à à à The Big Bang Theory is the scientific theory to explain the beginning of the world and of man. Scientists have discovered that there was a beginning of time, nothing before and what we call our universe after. According to the theory the universe started as small, dense, and extremely hot. After what they call the Big Bang, the universe cooled and expanded. An example that many scientists use is a balloon. The say that is starts with the popping of a balloon, releasing all its contents. Then the balloon continues to inflate. I would compare it to a raw noodle turning into a cooled, cooked noodle. The noodle was dense and extremely hot into an expanded, cool noodle. There are several evidences that support this theory, the first is that there was a beginning, second according to Hubbleââ¬â¢s law the galaxies and stars are moving away from us. Hubbleââ¬â¢s law would support the theory of expansion and that the universe was once compact. Another piece of eviden ce is the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation that would support that the universe was very hot at one time. The last piece of evidence would be that large quantities of Hydrogen and Helium are found in the universe and supports the models of Big Bang. The Big Bang Theory is the most popular and possible theory for creation, it is not the only one. à à à à à Christians view creation as clear and simple, God created the world in six days. According to the bible, ââ¬Å"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,â⬠(Genesis 1:1). ââ¬Å"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Briefing Essay
The purpose of this brief is to educate the newly elected board members on government accounting. Because the new board members are businesspeople from the community, they need to understand why government accounting is not the same as for-profit financial accounting. The brief will compare government accounting to for-profit financial accounting, describe the basic government reporting entity, and evaluate the Management Discussion and Analysis section of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the State of Alabama. The State of Alabamaââ¬â¢s fiscal year ended September 30, 2011 will be used in the evaluation of the MD&A section (Office of the State Comptroller, 2011). Governmental Accounting vs. For-Profit Financial Accounting Governmental accounting is not the same as for-profit financial accounting. Therefore, it is necessary that individuals employed in government entities have a good understanding of budgeting and accounting. Governments and for-profits have different purposes, activities that generate revenues, stakeholders, financial objectives, and desire to survive. Separate accounting and financial reporting standards are necessary because users of financial reports of governments and for-profits do not have the same needs (GASB, 2012). Governments are required to be accountable for the use of resources in their operating environment, unlike for-profit businesses. Governmental resources are acquired from the guaranteed payment of taxes paid by individual taxpayers. The taxes paid have no direct relationship to the services the taxpayer received. Therefore, taxpayers assess the value received from the resources they have provided to government. As a result, governmental accounting and financial reporting standards strive to help stakeholders evaluate if public resources are properly expensed and if the capacity of services improved or worsened from the previous year (GASB, 2012). Government Reporting Entity Identifying the accounting entity is one of the most importantà accounting issues. The financial reporting entity is the primary government and its component units. The primary government can be either a state, local, or special government. Component units are official separate organizations in which elected officials of the primary government are held financially accountable. A component unit and a primary government are dependent to one another. Their relationship is necessary to ensure that the reporting entityââ¬â¢s financial statements are not misleading or incomplete (Copley & Engstrom, 2011). State and local governments are advised to prepare a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). A CAFR should cover all funds and activities of the primary government and its component units. The CAFR consists of three parts: introductory, financial, and statistical. The Introductory Section of the CAFR includes the table of contents, letter of transmittal from the governmentââ¬â¢s Finance Director, list of government officials, and an organizational chart (Copley & Engstrom, 2011). The financial section includes an independent auditorââ¬â¢s report, managementââ¬â¢s discussion and analysis, government-wide financial statements, fund financial statements, financial statements notes, and any other required supplementary financial information. Last, the statistical section includes additional financial, economic, and demographic information (Office of Financial Management, 2012). By combining all three sections into one comprehensive report, the CAFR reveals the state governmentââ¬â¢s financial and operating activities that define its financial condition. Managementââ¬â¢s Discussion and Analysis In June 1999, the GASB issued a statement requiring government entities to include the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) within the CAFR. The MD&A discusses issues related to government entities, such as financial performance, capital resources, and budget trends, in regard to its financial position. The MD&A gives the government an opportunity to present an overview of its financial activities. This section contains most of the basic financial statements. Auditors are responsible for reviewing the financial material to verify that the information is correct (Copley & Engstrom, 2011). The State of Alabamaââ¬â¢s MD&A provides useful financial highlights to CAFR users and the public. At the end of September 30, 2011, Alabamaââ¬â¢s net assets increased by $335 million and exceeded liabilities byà $24.1 billion at the end of the fiscal year. By reviewing the financial highlights, a user can gather information about the stateââ¬â¢s six major funds that operate the government for Alabama. The General Fund and Education Trust fund were prorated by 15 and 3 percent, respectively because collection did not meet the projections outlined in the budget. Users also can access the stateââ¬â¢s basic financial statements, which consist of government-wide financial statements, fund financial statements, and notes to the financial statements. Because the MD&A performs its analysis using financial conditions based on the balance sheet, statement of revenues, expenditures, and changes in the funds balance, the CAFR is more understandable to its users (Department of Finance: Office of the State Comptroller, 2011). Conclusion The CAFR is an annual financial statement issued by a state or local government to represent its financial position. There are noteworthy differences between for-profit and governmental accounting. Understanding these differences is fundamental when measuring managementââ¬â¢s performance and the financial success or failure of the entity. The organization is accountable for its success or failures because of the information presented in the organizationââ¬â¢s CFAR. Furthermore, the MD&A provides a more comprehensible outline of managementââ¬â¢s breakdown and impacts of governmental activities on the financial situation of the organization. Under federal law, at eighteen we are consenting adults, and we are legally responsible for our actions. So why are we not seen as responsible enough go out to a bar? Peter was an intelligent and bright man. He lived a wonderful life. He was my friend who cried with me and advised me when I had problems with my work. I cannot tell you what it was, but I am happy that I had friend who always stayed next to me every time. He was the kind of friend who stands by you when you need somebody to be there. I first met him in our first year of high school. We were so young and such naughty boys. We took the same bus, lived in the same street. That is how I became close to Peter. We exercised every morning in 5 oclock before we go to school. That would be almost 60 years ago. He was also an intelligent man. Throughout school, he was aiming for dentistry. As far as I know, he had to get an OP 1 to enter the dentistry course. I also wanted to be a dentist, but I gave up because I thought it was impossible to be a dentist. Peter never gave up. I went to sleep around 11 oclock at night, but Peter wouldnt sleep in until around 12 oclock. He always went to sleep late and woke up early. Normally, people usually sleep around 6 to 7 hours, but he slept only 4 to 5 hours. I still cannot believe how a person slept only 4 hours and could then study again school. His dream finally became true to be a dentist after 8 years of hard working. And then, he got married before his graduation to his good friend, Cindy. They were so happy that they could live together forever. After his graduation and marriage, he made a weird decision. At that time, he could have been employed by Queen Elizabeth II Hospital to become a professional dentist in there. However, he booked a plane ticket to Ghana straight after his graduation. Even his wife, Cindy agreed with it. He built a small hospital funded by one of the biggest companies in Ghana. Although, it is funded by the biggest company, the conditions werent good enough; He treated many sick children and adults. There were a lot of people who had to wait a whole day to see him. His appearance wasnt as good as a normal person till his death. In his 4th year in Ghana, he suffered with many diseases, such as malaria, an endemic disease, heat stroke and many more. But until last week, he was still treating children as usual, even when he was sick. Peter will be in the heaven, no, he might be there already. My memory of him is that he lived everyday like Albert Schweitzer who is known as a famous devoted doctor. I am sure we all can meet him again with a smiley face. I will try to remember him as a good friend, an intelligent man and a famous dentist forever. Mostly, most of students who go to dentistry course get an OP 1 to an OP 2 which is almost A+ for every subject. But there is a one way that only International students are able to go dentistry without an OP. That is the test called IELTS Examination (International English Language Testing System). This examination is English test includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking that examine international students English proficiency. If students get minimum overall 7.0 out of 9.0, then they are qualified to apply the Bachelor of Dentistry. Next, I must take two more exams after I got qualification to enter. They are UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) and ISAT (International Student Admissions Test). These tests are essential exams to enter the dental school. UMAT tests students ability about basic scientific knowledge and ISAT international students ability to enter the university. After entering the dental school, I must study for 8 years with success grades. After graduation, I can be employed by many hospitals and become a professional dentist. To conclude, it is very hard to be a dentist that I have to take many exams. But, if I try my best with Gods help, I believe I can be a professional dentist one day.
